MENASA-Indigenous-Muslim-Polyglot-Dialect Junkie -- Comforted by Son Before Off West End Open
Updated: Apr 29
Salma Shaw is quite an accomplished individual. A former rocket scientist turned actor turned producer with a film, Silent Partner, on its way to possibly becoming an Oscar-qualifier in the short film category. So, on any given day, what would make Salma "nervous?" Knowing her son would be sitting in the audience watching her perform in Rain and Zoe Save the World currently playing Off West End at London’s Jermyn Street Theatre. It wasn't just seeing mom act that made Salma's nerves rattle a bit it was that she was in full theatrical force: "On my #Birthday last week (22022022), my son saw me perform in a show for the first time in which I act, sing, play ukulele, and perform physical theater. He got to witness it all! And he loved it. Before I went on, he said - 'remember, you don’t have to be perfect.'" #kindnessmatters #love"
Salma is being modest. In Rain and Zoe Save the World she is the moon, a motorbike, and a couple of burnt-out moms.
Critics took notice.
From WestEndBestFriend.co.UK "Salma Shaw’s performance as the moon is reminiscent of Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner’s Caroline, or Change but on this smaller scale, the fairy lit costume and ukulele gives the character bundles of charm." "The cast’s physical skill is clear to see as they cleverly create a motorbike that moves so believably using just the four actors and props. Credit must be given to Movement Director Jasmine Ricketts for drawing out the best of this cast in their physicality." From LondonTheatre1.com 'Director Hersh Ellis also has an eye for the visual, the most imaginative being the creation of the motor bike whenever it is needed by two members of the cast, Richard Holt and Salma Shaw. Holt is a very versatile actor, being required to create many different roles, including both Zoe’s father and Rain’s father, who is in reality dead. [S]alma Shaw is also required to take on many roles, from Rain’s mother to The Moon!
About Salma the actor, Broadway caliber singer and former Rocket Scientist: 1. Shares DNA with many people around the world. She is culturally Pakistani-British-American-Hoosier gal who is ethnically half-Indian, half-Persian with a little bit of European and Native American flair. BUT - she is Scottish by birth. 2. Language and dialect work fascinate her, and she is on a personal quest to improve her Urdu, Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, German and Farsi. 3. She is a two-time Helen Hayes Award recipient and 2020 AUDELCO nominee for Off-Broadway’s Bars and Measures. 4. She recurs on That Damn Michael Che. 5. Her son's name is a palindrome. Rain and Zoe Save the World is about two Washington State teenage climate activists embark on an impulsive motorcycle journey to join a group of oil protesters on the East Coast.
